Product Information

Name:
Iodoacetic anhydride
Synonyms:
  • Acetic Acid, Iodo-, Anhydride
  • Iodoacetic anhydride
Description:

Iodoacetic anhydride is a chemical reagent that is used in organic synthesis. It is a hydrophobic compound that reacts with nucleophilic groups, such as the hydroxyl group found in proteins and nucleic acids. Iodoacetic anhydride irreversibly inhibits the enzyme DNA gyrase, which stabilizes the double-stranded DNA molecule by preventing it from unwinding. This reaction leads to strand breakage and prevents DNA replication. The binding of iodoacetic anhydride to reactive, cyclic peptide molecules leads to their degradation by proteolytic enzymes. This process may be responsible for some of the toxicity observed in animal studies.
