N-[2-Iodoethyl]trifluoroacetamide is a reactive alkylating agent that is used in the synthesis of biologically active molecules. It reacts with lysines, tryptic and other amino acids to form covalent bonds, which can be cleaved by hydrolysis. The compound also reacts with sulfhydryl groups to produce sulfonium ions, which react with the thiol group at position C6 on the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ -ATPase to inhibit muscle contraction. N-[2-Iodoethyl]trifluoroacetamide has been shown to cause allergic reactions in rats, mice, and guinea pigs. This drug has also been observed to have an effect on the central nervous system when administered at high doses.
