2-(5-Isoxazolyl)phenol is a halogenated phenolic compound that belongs to the group of antibiotics. It has shown antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria and can be used to treat bacterial infections. 2-(5-Isoxazolyl)phenol binds to the chloride ion in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition, thereby preventing formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. This drug also has a unsymmetrical structure which contributes to its bioactivity.
