Iron(III) acetylacetonate is an activated form of iron, which has been shown to be effective in the treatment of wastewater. This compound is highly reactive with organic compounds and human pathogens. Iron(III) acetylacetonate can be used as a catalyst in organic reactions, such as the oxidation of alcohols, and also has antimicrobial properties. Iron(III) acetylacetonate activates by reacting with water, forming FeO and HO molecules. The reaction mechanism for this compound is similar to that of other organometallic compounds. Iron(III) acetylacetonate has a coordination geometry around the central iron atom, which is octahedral. The activation energies for this compound are lower than those for iron oxides or other particle materials.
