Isonitrosoacetophenone is a plant metabolite that has been found in the leaves of some plants. It is a chlorogenic acid that is a redox potential, which means it can either act as an electron donor or electron acceptor. Isonitrosoacetophenone has been shown to have neurologic effects in rats and mice, with symptoms including head nodding, circling, and muscle tremor. These effects were observed after intraperitoneal injections of the compound. The mechanism of action for these neurotoxic effects may be due to inhibition of protein synthesis and oxidative stress.
Isonitrosoacetophenone has also been found to inhibit the activity of p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP) reductase in rat liver homogenates with an IC50 value of 1 μM. This effect was found to be reversible by addition of NADPH and GSH, suggesting that this compound may cause oxidative stress through depletion of glutathione
