Indoxyl butyrate is a chromatographic assay device that is used to measure the concentration of indoxyl in human serum and other body fluids. This product contains a diazonium salt and a streptococcus faecalis enzyme, which reacts with the indoxyl molecule to produce a colored product. The color intensity is proportional to the concentration of indoxyl in the sample. The Streptococcus faecalis enzyme can be immobilized on an inert substrate, such as silica gel or cellulose acetate, so that it can be reused in subsequent assays. Indoxyl butyrate can also be used as a diagnostic tool for streptococcus infections, since it inhibits streptococcal growth by acting as an inhibitor of enzymes such as alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase.
