3-Isoxazolecarboxylic acid is a synthetic compound that belongs to the class of isoxazoles. It has been shown to have an effect on the cell membrane and causes leakage of ions, leading to death of the bacteria. 3-Isoxazolecarboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but it has no effect on Mycobacterium avium or Mycobacterium kansasii. 3-Isoxazolecarboxylic acid also inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by inhibiting the ATPase activity of bacterial ribosomes.
