2-Iodothiophene is a chemical that is used in organic synthesis. It is a sodium-dependent glucose transporter inhibitor, and can be used to study the role of glucose transporters in diabetes. 2-Iodothiophene binds to the hydroxyl group on proteins, which prevents them from performing their normal function. The inhibitory compound can also be classified as a natural product, since it occurs naturally in plants and animals. This substance inhibits the reaction mechanism of malonic acid with a protein target, which may lead to autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and arthritis. 2-Iodothiophene reacts with picolinic acid under UV light to produce an unstable intermediate called benzopyranoquinoline. Picolinic acid is an important intermediate for the production of niacin (vitamin B3).
