2-Isopropyl-3-methoxy pyrazine (IMP) is a colorless solid that is soluble in organic solvents. It has a melting point of 118 °C, and its density is 1.04 g/cm3. IMP is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H7ClO2. The compound belongs to the group of methyl ketones, which are compounds containing a carbonyl group bound to two hydrocarbon groups. IMP can be synthesized by reacting diethyl succinate with hydroxyl group in the presence of acid catalyst such as hydrochloric acid. The reaction mechanism involves electrophilic addition of hydroxyl group to the succinic ester followed by protonation and elimination of water molecule from the intermediate. IMP can also be synthesized from light exposure and lc-ms/ms method involving methyl ketones, caffeic acids, and fatty acids as starting materials.
