Product Information
- Ethane, 1-iodo-2-methoxy-
1,2-Iodoethane is a reactive compound with a viscosity of 1.5 cP at 20°C and a boiling point of 92°C. It can be used as both an alkylating agent and an electrophile in organic synthesis. 1,2-Iodoethane is also used to generate chiral compounds by the addition of thionyl chloride. The reaction of 1,2-iodoethane with anions such as chloride or bromide leads to the formation of ionic liquids that have transport properties similar to those of water. 1,2-Iodoethane has been shown to react electrochemically with ethylene in the presence of a platinum electrode in order to produce hydrogen gas. This reaction is called electrolysis, and it occurs because the molecule forms hydrogen bonds with the platinum electrode due to its electronegativity.
