Isopropyl 2-furoate is a compound that can be used in the production of cellulose. It is sustainable and has a low compressive strength. Isopropyl 2-furoate reacts with magnesium oxide to produce an α,β unsaturated aldehyde. The reaction mechanism of this reaction is not yet known, but it is thought to be due to the transfer of an ethyl group from the magnesium oxide. The β-unsaturated aldehydes react with the isopropyl group to produce an ester that can enhance bacterial cellulose production.
