5,6-Diaminofluorescein diacetate is a reactive ester that can be hydrolyzed to 5,6-diamino-2,7-dichlorofluorescein. It has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on liver cells and muscle cells. The hydrochloride salt is an oxidant that can react with nucleic acids and proteins in the cell nucleus. When used as a probe for confocal microscopy, 5,6-Diaminofluorescein diacetate shows strong fluorescence in nuclei and mitochondria. This compound also has immunomodulatory effects that may be due to its ability to inhibit the proliferation of T lymphocytes by inhibiting protein synthesis.
