Josamycin propionate is a type of antibiotic that targets the fatty acid synthesis in bacteria. It is used to treat bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Josamycin propionate binds to the bacterial enzyme fatty acid synthetase, which prevents the conversion of acetyl coenzyme A into fatty acids and thereby inhibits bacterial growth. Josamycin propionate has been shown to be effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The binding constants for josamycin are high for Escherichia coli but low for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which may explain its poor activity against this organism.
