Description

All-trans 4-keto retinoic acid is a synthetic retinoid that has been used for the treatment of bowel disease. It is a derivative of vitamin A and binds to the retinoic acid receptor, which activates gene transcription. All-trans 4-keto retinoic acid has been shown to induce apoptosis in Hl-60 cells and myeloma cell lines by increasing cytosolic calcium levels and inhibiting protein synthesis. Clinical trials have shown that all-trans 4-keto retinoic acid can be used to treat inflammatory bowel disease. This drug has also been shown to inhibit epidermal growth factor, which may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis.
