Kinetensin is a peptide hormone that is released from the gastrointestinal tract and functions to regulate the release of insulin from the pancreas. Kinetensin binds to its receptor, which stimulates the release of intracellular Ca2+ ions. The kinetics of this process are affected by disulfide bonds, pH optimum and receptor activity. Kinetensin has been shown to be an effective treatment for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis in animal models. It has also shown promise in treating autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
