L-lactic acid is a biocompatible polymer that can be used as a fluorescent probe to identify bacteria. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against wild-type strains of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, but not against mutant strains with resistance. L-lactic acid also has therapeutic potential for the treatment of infectious diseases by binding to sodium citrate, an antidiabetic agent with antibacterial properties. L-lactic acid has been shown to induce pluripotent cells from mouse embryonic fibroblasts and human somatic cells, which may lead to future applications in regenerative medicine.
