Description:

Laudanosoline is an alkaloid that belongs to the class of bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids. It has antioxidative properties and can be used as a chemical biology tool for studying enzymes. Laudanosoline is synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine by a hydroxylation reaction, which occurs on the hydroxyl group at position C-3. The enzyme responsible for this reaction is called lysine acetyltransferase. The synthesis of laudanosoline can also be achieved through a more complex enzymatic pathway, which includes oxidative decarboxylation and methylation reactions with co-factors such as pyridoxal phosphate (PLP). Laudanosoline has been shown to inhibit neuronal degeneration in mice models and has been investigated as a potential drug for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease.
Laudanosoline inhibits acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that
