Lithium aluminium hydride (LiAlH4) is an inorganic compound that is used as a reducing agent in organic chemistry. It is soluble in tetrahydrofuran and ether, but not water. LiAlH4 reacts with epidermal growth factor (EGF) to form a 6-membered ring of nitrogen atoms. The reaction proceeds by nucleophilic addition of the nitrogen atoms to the carbon atom adjacent to the epidermal growth factor, followed by elimination of water. This process forms a cyclohexane ring and leaves the epidermal growth factor intact. LiAlH4 also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for the treatment of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, and AIDS.
