Lauric anhydride is a colorless, oily liquid with a sweet odor. It is a member of the group of alkanoic acids and has a hydroxyl group at one end and a carboxylic acid group at the other. Lauric acid has been shown to bind to zirconium oxide, which may be due to its ability to form ion pairs with zirconium ions. The reaction between lauric acid and zirconium oxide produces magnetic particles that can be used as catalysts for many chemical reactions. This compound has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in cell culture experiments, which may be related to its calcium binding ability. Lauric acid reacts readily with hydrochloric acid or ester linkages, making it reactive.
