Product Information
- Lepirudin Recombinant
Lepirudin is a drug used to treat thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. It inhibits the function of thrombin by binding to its active site and preventing it from converting fibrinogen into fibrin. Lepirudin is an inhibitor molecule that binds to human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, which are cells that contain large quantities of protein. The rate constant for the reaction between these two molecules was determined using chromatographic analysis. Lepirudin has been shown to be toxic in animal studies, leading to allergic symptoms such as rash, fever, chills, nausea, and vomiting. These reactions were reduced when given orally as a prodrug.
