- Leptin, Human
Leptin is a protein hormone that is produced by adipose cells and functions to regulate energy balance. It has been shown to bind to receptors in the hypothalamus, which causes an increase in the production of adenosine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and melanocortin. Leptin also regulates the expression of leptin receptor proteins, which are found on host cells. This active form is expressed at high levels in tissues such as bone marrow, skeletal muscle, and brown fat. The physiological function of this protein is not understood fully but it has been shown to have a role in regulating spatial memory function in mice.
