Trans-Latanoprost (LTP) is a synthetic prostaglandin analog that is used to treat glaucoma. LTP acts on the D2 receptor, which is found in the ciliary body and iris. It binds to this receptor and increases the production of cyclic AMP, which increases the release of aqueous humor from the eye. Trans-Latanoprost has low bioavailability due to its high degree of lipophilicity, which limits its use as an ophthalmic solution. This drug also has enantiomeric forms, as well as cis and trans isomers. The trans form of Latanoprost may be more potent than the cis form because it binds more tightly to the D2 receptor. The trans form can also be given orally or topically without losing potency.
