Limonene oxide is a natural substance found in plants, fruits, and vegetables. It has shown antiviral activity against HIV-1 by preventing the virus from binding to CD4 receptors. Limonene oxide binds to the hydroxyl group on the receptor, which prevents the virus from entering cells. The reactive nature of limonene oxide makes it a good candidate for use as an antimicrobial agent. Limonene oxide has also been shown to inhibit bacterial growth and kill bacteria by reacting with disulfide bonds in proteins. This reaction causes changes in protein conformation that disrupts their function and leads to cell death. Limonene oxides high resistance to degradation makes it a good candidate for use as an antimicrobial agent or preservative.
