2,3-Dihydro-9,10-dihydroxy-1,4-anthracene-dione is a synthetic molecule that has shown chemotherapeutic activity in the treatment of cancer. It binds to DNA and inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA gyrase, which is an enzyme that maintains the integrity of bacterial DNA. 2,3-Dihydro-9,10-dihydroxy-1,4-anthracene-dione also has been shown to bind to alkoxy radical in a thermal expansion experiment. This molecule binds with chloride ions through hydrogen bonding. The binding constants have been determined using nmr spectroscopy and magnetic resonance spectroscopy at various temperatures. 2,3-Dihydro-9,10-dihydroxy-1,4-anthracene dione also has a hydroxy group (-OH) which can be reacted with amines for further modification.
