Lead sulfate is a calcium binding, lead salt that has been shown to be stable in the presence of other metals and in the presence of oxygen. Lead sulfate can act as a metal chelate, which means it can bind to metals such as calcium and magnesium. Lead sulfate has been used as an optical sensor for pH changes in solutions. It has also been shown to have probiotic properties, which means it can stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut.
Lead sulfate is toxic and exposure can lead to serious health problems including cardiac arrhythmias and kidney damage. The toxic effects are thought to stem from its ability to inhibit mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation by inhibiting ATP synthesis at complex I, leading to depletion of cellular ATP levels.
