Lanthanum is a rare-earth metal that has a high thermal expansion coefficient. When combined with other materials, lanthanum can be used to make alloys with desirable properties for use in light emitting devices and lasers. Lanthanum fluoride (LaF3) has been used as an adsorbent for hydrogen fluoride (HF) and boron nitride (BN). LaF3 was synthesized by the reaction of HF and BN at 1100°C under a constant pressure of 2.5 MPa. FTIR spectroscopy showed that this material had a strong absorption peak at 1750 cm-1, which is characteristic of the LaF3 structure.
