Lead iodide is a chemical compound that is used in the manufacture of perovskite solar cells. Lead iodide can be synthesized by the reaction of lead with iodine, or by the reaction of lead oxide with concentrated nitric acid. The synthesis process involves three steps: (1) reacting lead metal with iodine, (2) adding anhydrous sodium and heating to about 200°C for about 1 hour, and (3) adding boron nitride powder to the mixture and heating it to about 600°C for at least 4 hours.
Lead iodide has been shown to exhibit high chemical stability in air and water, as well as good transport properties. It also does not react with nitrogen atoms from ammonia gas at temperatures below 400°C. Lead iodide has been shown to be a good precursor material for perovskite solar cells because it has a low band gap energy and a high electron mobility.
