Loureirin A is a polyphenol compound isolated from the Chinese herb, Lourourea. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cells and exert biological properties that are similar to epidermal growth factor (EGF). Loureirin A has been shown to stimulate the proliferation of human keratinocytes in cultures and also increases cell adhesion. The polyphenolic compound binds to EGF receptors on the cells surface, which leads to activation of tyrosine kinase activity. This in turn leads to phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and AKT, which are molecules that regulate cell proliferation. Loureirin A may be useful for the treatment of cancer or diabetic patients, as it can be used as a substitute for anastrozole group therapy.
