4-Hydroxy-8-methoxyquinoline-3-carboxylic acid is a hydrochloride salt of the organic compound 4-hydroxy-8-methoxyquinoline. It is used as a silicone stabilizer and has been shown to be an antibacterial agent. 4-Hydroxy-8-methoxyquinoline can also be used as a sensor for methanol and stabilizer for resins. This compound has also been shown to be resistant to bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics such as penicillin, erythromycin, and tetracycline. The compound has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram negative bacteria including Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. The disulfonate group on the molecule may account for the water solubility of this compound.
