5-Methylthiazole is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by binding to the chloride ion. 5-Methylthiazole binds to the molecule (in this case, chloride) and forms a dipole in order to form a covalent bond with it. This reaction mechanism is intramolecular, meaning that it occurs within one molecule. The chloride ion is a substrate molecule for this reaction. 5-Methylthiazole has been shown to be effective against gram negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, but not against gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. Molecular modeling studies have established that 5-methylthiazole binds to the hydroxyl group on the ribose sugar of RNA and prevents transcription by inhibiting RNA polymerase.
