2-(Methylthio)-2-thiazoline (MTTZ) is an activated carbapenem antibiotic that is used in the treatment of infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. The mechanism of action for MTTZ can be explained by the ring-opening reaction that occurs when it reacts with a chloride or other halide. This leaves a five-membered ring that reacts with formyl group to produce trifluoroacetic acid and methyl cinnamate. In model studies, MTTZ has been shown to react with hydrochloric acid and trimethylsilylmethyl groups to produce 2-(methylthio)-2-thiazoline and 2-(trimethylsilyl)ethanol.
