Methiothepin is a cholinergic that binds to dopamine receptors and inhibits the enzyme activity of monoamine oxidase (MAO) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE). It is an experimental drug used in the treatment of prostate cancer cells. Methiothepin has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of prostate cancer cells by stimulating 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) release. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit the binding of estradiol benzoate to 5-HT2 receptors, which may be due to methiothepin’s ability to act as a 5-HT1 receptor agonist. Methiothepin has also been shown to have neurotrophic effects in rat striatal neurons and may be useful for pharmacological treatment.
