Magnesium fluoride is a compound that is made up of magnesium and fluorine. It has the chemical formula MgF2. Magnesium fluoride is a white solid, with a melting point of 922°C and a vapor pressure of 2.5 x 10-6 Pa at room temperature. The thermal expansion coefficient (α) for this compound is 6.8x10-7/°C at 25°C and 7.4x10-7/°C at 100°C, which means that it expands when heated and contracts when cooled. This material does not react with water or air, but reacts with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) to produce hydrogen fluoride (HF). X-ray diffraction data was obtained from crystals of magnesium fluoride, in order to investigate the structure of this material.
