Manganese (IV) oxide is a reactive compound that is used in water treatment to remove hydrogen sulfide from wastewater. Manganese (IV) oxide reacts with water vapor and forms manganese sulfate, which precipitates out of solution. The structure of manganese (IV) oxide has been analyzed by X-ray diffraction and found to be pyrolusite, a mineral composed of manganese dioxide. Nuclear DNA damage has been shown to cause neuronal death in mice treated with manganese chloride. Mouse tumor cells were exposed to manganese chloride and showed increased levels of DNA damage, as well as increased apoptosis and decreased proliferation rates. Polymerase chain reaction experiments have also shown that the polymerase activity of DNA is inhibited by exposure to manganese chloride.
