2-Methyl-2,5-dimethoxy-2,5-dihydrofuran is a furan compound that can be synthesized from methanol. The hydrolytic reaction of 2-methyl-2,5-dimethoxyfuran with hydrochloric acid provides 2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine and 2,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde. The synthesis of racemates starts by reacting the corresponding racemic acid with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst to produce the enantiomers. This process can be carried out using either hydrolysis or electrolysis as a means of separating the stereoisomers. Hydrolysis is accomplished by adding water to a mixture containing the racemic acid and alcohol in an organic solvent such as benzene or chloroform.
