- Benzofuran, 3-methyl-
3-Methylbenzofuran is a heterocyclic compound and an organic compound that belongs to the benzofurans. It is synthesized by reacting hydrogen chloride with carbon disulfide in the presence of molybdenum as catalyst. 3-Methylbenzofuran has been shown to be a potent elicitor for the production of abscisic acid, a plant hormone involved in stomatal closure, when applied in culture. 3-Methylbenzofuran is highly acidic and reacts with silver trifluoromethanesulfonate to form a precipitate. This reaction takes place at high temperatures (above 50°C).
