5-Methylpyridine-2-carboxylic acid is a synthetic compound that can be used as a fluorescent probe for the study of enzyme activities. It is synthesized from 5-methylpyridine and 2-carboxybenzaldehyde in an asymmetric synthesis. The hydroxyl group on the phenyl ring, which is responsible for the fluorescence, is decarboxylated to produce picolinic acid. This product also has been shown to stabilize lincolnensis, a bacterium that has been found to be resistant to many antibiotics.
