6-Methoxy-8-nitroquinoline is a nitroquinoline derivative that inhibits the growth of malaria parasites in vitro. It has been shown to inhibit the polymerase activity of malarial DNA polymerase in mammalian cells. 6-Methoxy-8-nitroquinoline has also been shown to be an effective antimalarial agent, but is not active against chloroquine or pyrimethamine resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum. It binds to calcium in the parasite's acidic environment, which prevents it from dissolving and thereby inhibits its activity. This drug also has an effect on human erythrocytes and can be used as a treatment for malaria.
