5-Methoxybenzimidazole is a corrinoid that is biosynthesized by corrin, which is the precursor of vitamin B12. It can be found in human feces and has a structural analysis with the same x-ray absorption spectrum as methylcobalamin. 5-Methoxybenzimidazole has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against anaerobic bacteria, such as Clostridium difficile. The biosynthesis process for this compound has been studied using magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray structures. This analog of methylcobalamin has also been shown to inhibit the growth of yeast cells, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
