Description

2-(2-Methoxyethoxy)acetic acid is a glycol ether that has been shown to be a potential endocrine disruptor in both Sprague-Dawley rats and CD-1 mice. A study of 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)acetic acid in urine samples showed that women exposed to the chemical exhibited an increased excretion of 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)acetic acid and its metabolites, as well as increased levels of s-phenylmercapturic acid, which is a metabolite of the chemical. This increase was not seen in men or women who were not exposed to the chemical. In addition, magnetic resonance spectroscopy showed changes in the testicular tissue of male rats when exposed to 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)acetic acid for short periods.
