It is a colorless liquid that can be used as a plant growth regulator and reagent in organic synthesis. 2-Methyl-1-[4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl] propan-1-one has been shown to be an excellent catalyst for the conversion of isobutyric acid to acetic acid. This compound reacts rapidly and selectively with isobutyric acid, producing acetic acid with high yield and purity. Reactions are complete within minutes at room temperature, with no need for heating or pressure.
