Methyl 2-fluoro-2-methylpropanoate is a herbicide that belongs to the group of fluorine and chlorine derivatives. It is used to control weeds in pastures, lawns, and other areas. Methyl 2-fluoro-2-methylpropanoate is applied at a rate of 1 gallon per acre for control of annual grasses, or 1 quart per acre for perennial weeds. The reaction time varies depending on the weather conditions and the type of soil. This chemical is water soluble and has a low vapor pressure. It can be mixed with thionyl chloride or difluoroacetate to make it more effective as an herbicide. Methyl 2-fluoro-2-methylpropanoate also works as a thickener in paints, varnishes, lacquers, and adhesives.
