Methylurea is a hydrophobic compound that is synthesized from methanol and ammonia. It is an organic base that has been shown to react with the hydroxyl group of DNA, producing a methylated base. Methylurea also reacts with proteins when in solution at high concentrations. The reaction mechanism involves the transfer of the methyl group from one molecule to another via nucleophilic substitution. X-ray diffraction data showed that methylurea polymerizes in a neutral structure, which differs from other bases such as triethylamine and dimethylamine. The nitrogen atoms are found in high values, which may be due to the presence of NH3 or N2H4 in its chemical structure.
