N-Methyl-1-aminohex-5-ene (NMAH) is a nonpeptide that has been shown to inhibit the replication of hepatitis C virus. It inhibits viral RNA synthesis and halts the initiation of protein translation. NMAH was found to be more potent than alpha interferon in inhibiting replication of the virus in cell culture and animal models. In addition, it has potent inhibitory activity against serine proteases such as trypsin, chymotrypsin, and elastase. This compound also inhibits the growth of cancer cells by altering the cell cycle and inducing apoptosis. NMAH may potentially be a useful therapeutic agent for treating liver cancer or other cancers that are sensitive to serine proteases.
