Product Information
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid that is produced in the colon by bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber. Butyrate has been shown to protect the colon from inflammation, oxidative damage, and cancer. It also inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis of colorectal cancer cells by regulating cell cycle arrest and reactive oxygen species production. Butyrate may act as a transporter for lipids in the intestinal epithelium by acting as a buffer or transport molecule for long-chain fatty acids. The mechanism for this appears to be mediated through butyric acid, glycyl-l-leucine, and other volatile fatty acids that are involved in regulating epithelial permeability.
