6-Methyl-2-phenylquinoline-4-carboxylic acid is a chromatographic reagent that is used in the separation of aliphatic amines. 6-Methyl-2-phenylquinoline-4-carboxylic acid is an aliphatic amine with a carboxamide group, which makes it suitable for use as a fluorescence indicator. The reagent has a quantum yield of 0.6 and emits light at 360 nm in acidic conditions and at 440 nm in alkaline conditions. It also has hydrolytic properties, which allow it to break down into ethyl esters and n-hydroxysuccinimide esters when exposed to water.
