2-Hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde is a phenolic compound that is used in the synthesis of other compounds. It can be synthesized by the condensation of 1-naphthaldehyde and formaldehyde, followed by catalytic hydrogenation. 2-Hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde can also be synthesized through the reaction of methoxyacetophenone with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, followed by methanol extraction. The use of 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde in chemical reactions is dependent on its solubility in different solvents. In liquid phase reactions, it will only react with chlorophenyl and not with benzyl or methyl esters. 2-Hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde has been shown to inhibit lipase activity and to have antiinflammatory properties.
