3-Methyl-4-nitrobenzohydrazide is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the cell wall, thereby preventing the synthesis of essential cell components. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of staphylococcus and pneumoniae in vitro. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for 3-methyl-4-nitrobenzohydrazide against Staphylococcus epidermidis is 0.25 μg/mL, which is much lower than that for other antibiotics such as erythromycin (1 μg/mL), gentamicin (0.5 μg/mL), and ciprofloxacin (0.25 μg/mL). 3-Methyl-4-nitrobenzohydrazide also inhibits the growth of many bacterial strains, including Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
