Methyl 2-amino-6-tert-butyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1-benzothiophene-3-carboxylate (MTB) is a lead compound that activates the retinoid X receptor. It is a potent activator of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor α (PPARα), and has been shown to protect against Alzheimer's disease in mice by reducing β amyloid levels. MTB also has neuroprotective effects and may be useful in the treatment of other neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease.
