Moskene is a nitro compound that has been shown to have carcinogenic potential. It is used as an intermediate for the production of xylene, glycol ethers, and other chemicals in the petrochemical industry. It is also used as a solvent in analytical chemistry and as an extractant in wastewater treatment. The acute toxicities of Moskene are not well studied, but it can cause skin irritation and dermatitis when exposed to skin. Moskene is metabolized by enzymes into ketones with analytical methods being developed for its detection.
